The artistic process
Since 1980, the abundance of common birds has fallen by a quarter in Europe (Rigal & al., 2023). Agricultural species have declined by almost 60%, due to intensive farming. The massive use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers is wiping out the insects and invertebrates they feed on, while hedgerows, woods and other habitats are becoming increasingly rare. Will we soon see the “silent spring” predicted by American biologist Rachel Carson in her seminal 1962 work on modern ecology?
