The artistic process
This diptych was inspired by the two field surveys that Nicole King carried out for Total in Indonesia over thirty years ago. The mangrove, one of the most important coastal ecosystems in the tropics, serves as a nursery for many marine species and is disappearing at a rapid rate. The first access to the wild mangrove of Borneo was opened-up by the oil industry. Now the mangrove is also distroyed by huge shrimp farming ponds (like other 15 million hectares of the world’s mangrove).
