The artistic process
Fossil fuels bear multiple responsibilities: global warming, pollution and reduced biodiversity. The ocean, symbolized here by the waves trapped in the supporting structure, is taken hostage, as it was during the Deepwater Horizon or Elgin explosions. I’ve worked on offshore oil platforms like these. The harshness of living and working conditions is too often overlooked. As is often the case, here I use the technology of black-and-white photography to evoke industry, and the ecological gesture of color painting to integrate the sky and sea.
